Tips to keep your carpet & flooring clean & protected this winter!

Rubber floor mats. Rubber floor mats will protect the carpet in your car. They will catch the snow, rain, salt, and other grime and prevent these from soiling your vehicle, as well as your home. They are also very easy to take out and rinse off at home.

Remove your shoes. Our shoes are covered in bacteria, dirt, and other disgusting things. The last thing you want to do is track this stuff inside your home and onto your floor, where your children, friends, and family might sit! Just read this article that contains several studies on how dirty the bottom of our shoes can be.

Keep your garage floor and driveway clean. This can be done by sweeping and/or shoveling and pressure washing to eliminate soil that can be tracked inside. For commercial businesses, keep sidewalks clear of debris as well.

Place walk-off mats or bound remnants on top of your carpet or flooring to absorb soil and moisture. This should be done especially in high traffic areas, such as at entry and exit points. Clean mats on a regular basis so they don’t become sources of soil themselves. Be sure to check area rugs for colorfastness before placing them on the carpet. The color in some rugs may bleed through and rugs with a rubber backing can discolor the carpet below.

Protect your flooring investment. For Carpet, Rugs, and Furniture, reapply Scotchgard Protector at each cleaning to keep stains from setting in and the soil from grinding in. For Tile & Grout, reapply grout sealer after cleaning to keep stains from setting in and the soil from grinding into the grout lines. For Wood Floors, reapply a refinisher after cleaning to revitalize and give the floor a uniform sheen.

Remove your garden hose. Disconnect garden hoses from all outside faucets in the fall BEFORE freezing temperatures to prevent any flooding in your home. Find more Water Damage Prevention Tips here.

Clean & repair your gutters. Be sure to clean your gutters after the leaves fall or you could have a mess on your hands this spring. This can also prevent water damage to your home.
